Este trabalho nos oferece diversas perspectivas sobre a educação de adultos. É útil compreender este tipo de educação a partir de múltiplas perspectivas, porque ela própria assume múltiplas formas. Há muitas maneiras pelas quais as pessoas aprendem ao longo da vida. Para compreender a educação de adultos é necessário compreender a diversidade de contextos, prestadores, atores e tipos de oferta que participam no apoio à sua aprendizagem, e este livro revela e reflete sobre algumas das diversas estruturas, políticas e práticas que a compõem. A educação de adultos pode ser formal, pode ocorrer em sala de aula, com currículo fixo e avaliação que leva ao credenciamento. Mas também pode ser não formal, assumindo a forma de um círculo de leitura, de apoio individual num workshop, ou integrado em atividades culturais mais amplas. À medida que examinamos estes contextos e consideramos os desafios e oportunidades neles descritos, começamos a reconhecer temas comuns: questões de currículo e preparação de professores, políticas públicas e legislação, representação e visibilidade. E embora as diferenças locais sejam muitas vezes acentuadas, começamos a ouvir uma voz comum em todos os intervenientes envolvidos. Lembra-nos também que a educação de adultos não é uma ilha, mas afeta muitas outras áreas da vida. Através dos textos, vemos a influência da teoria do capital humano na política educacional de três países, com forte foco no desenvolvimento económico, na empregabilidade e no estreitamento dos objetivos valorizados pelos governos.
